Why Ladies’ Tennis Should be Respected

by Beth Cranstall

Honestly, what is going on?

When Steffi Graf ruled the game tennis lovers did not like it. When Venus and Serena were wiping the floor with any person on their road to the championship, people did not enjoy it. And now when grand slams are up for grabs? People don’t appreciate it.

Most admit that the Williams duo win easily the majority of the time. However injuries and abridged non-Slam tournament schedules spell they presently meet in the draw before the finals. Although once more we must remember that very recently the above-mentioned whining regarding this regular matchup in the championship and their authority over other players.

Thus now we have Dinara Safina boasting the #1 spot in the ranks and the US Open seeds. And what do they indicate? She hasn’t earned it because she has never won a Grand Slam (also she’s blown matches in a few slam championship recently.) But she’s getting to slam title and she is pretty amusing along the way, on the court and off.

Yesterday Safina had to fight it out for a second time, becoming the 1st #1 seed to be beaten in the 1st round. Was this engaging? I thought it was. However we will hear all regarding the inaccuracy of the rank method, and the rest of that junk.

And then there was Venus Williams last night–also pushed to three pairs. Additionally entertaining. (Additionally note that Venus didn’t have the most successful of summers post Wimbledon.) However in all likelihood to be heard is the prevalence of injuries among the sisters Williams and their “distractions” off the courts.

And currently Kim Clijsters is back and instead of being wonderfully enthralled - which someone ought to be because she’s fun and polite and a fine competitor - tennis lovers are all like “okay what does it say about the ladies game that she could come back and have a 6-2 win-loss count for the summer season?”

Well I think it asserts that she - just like she consistently has -exercises extremely well. And that she is an experienced pro athlete and she has practically zero to lose.

So let’s simply end all the bashing, please. Sure, there are imperfections in the women’s game. (Like the absence of variety in terms of playing style.) But I for my part like that it’s everyone’s guess as to who’ll be in that finals in less than 2 weeks. And I anticipate seeing how they get there.
