Top Seven Female Tennis Professionals in My 30 Years

Monday, November 30th, 2009
by Maggie King

While there have been many great tennis players over the course of the last few decades, such as Agassi, Sampras, McEnroe, and others, I believe that women have been just as great.

Women are faster, stronger, and harder working in the world of professional tennis and we’ve been lucky enough to see some absolutely great players. Here are the 7 best since’80, in my opinion.

Coming in at number seven on my list is Venus Williams. In her late 20s now, she’s been in pro tennis for 15 years and she’s simply been phenomenal. With many grand slam wins and a firm grip on Wimbledon, she’s one of the best women to ever play the sport.

6. Justine Henin. At her peak, she was beating both of the Williams sisters. She retired early though. Lucky for us, she just announced a comeback. At just 27 years old, there’s plenty of gas left in the tank here.

Monica Seles was one of my favorite players growing up, and I’m still saddened by the fact that some deranged man decided to put a knife into her during the match. Her career was never the same after this, but she seriously dominated women’s tennis before this happened.

It’s really hard to put Chris Evert here at four, but that’s how competitive this field is. With’ career slams, she is simply one of the best to ever play.

3. Serena Williams. A true powerhouse on the women’s tour who won’t be going away anytime soon. She’s the strongest women’s player in the world right now.

You wouldn’t believe it, but Martina Navratilova continued to play doubles well into this decade. Not only did she play, but she won tournaments. That’s how great she was, and she was even better at her peak.

Lastly, we have Steffi Graf, who I like to call the queen of modern tennis. She has more grand slams than anyone else with 22, and she was simply incredible.

Design A Comfortable Mascot Costume

Monday, November 23rd, 2009
by Adriana Noton

When you hear the word “mascot”, most of us think about a sporting event and that funny big chicken walking around looking silly. A person wearing a mascot costume is seen in most stadiums during a game, but few of us have thought about what goes into designing and making that costume. How do you design comfortable custom mascots?

Mascots have become so common, they even have a following. Mascots have fans that wait for them to come on the field or stage and cheer when they appear. Many teams and schools are identified by their mascot. When you see a particular mascot dressed in his distinctive costume, you think of the team or school he represents.

Many mascots are for entertainment value. They can appear before the game or during a break, like halftime, to entertain the audience. Many people will attend a game or event just to see what the mascot will be doing that day. When a game seems to be going slowly or dragging, the mascot can appear making everyone attending happy and having fun again. They are funny and fans remember their antics long after the event.

The mascot is usually silly and seems to be moving around with ease; but he or she can be wearing a heavy costume that, sometimes, may have little ventilation. Most of us forget that there is a person inside the costume. The person wearing the costume must be taken into consideration when the mascot’s outfit is constructed.

Professional team’s budgets allow them to spend more on their mascot’s costume so many of them may be wearing a costume that is made with lighter material and the person is able to breathe. The way the mascot costume is made has a lot to do with how easily the person moves around and how long the person can wear the costume. When a team or organization is planning to employee someone to wear the mascot costume, agility and strength of the person wearing the costume is a prerequisite for the job.

There are some concerns before constructing a new costume. The climate where the costume will be worn should be taken into consideration. If the weather is warm, lighter material should be used. If the weather is warm and turns cold, the costume will need to have ways to remove or add material to keep the person inside warm or cool.

Fiberglass can be used to construct the head because it is light. Visibility from inside the head will be important to the design. If the person wearing the costume has to move around, he will need good visibility for safety.

The body of the suit can be sewn with various materials, such as polyester, cotton, or denim. A small battery operated fan is often built into the body of the suit to keep the person wearing the custom cool during warmer months. If the body of the suit is constructed loosely, the person will get less warm.

If you are having someone off site design the mascot costume, agree on a cost that includes design and material. When you find someone to design it, get a guarantee that it will be an original. You will want your organization to have a mascot costume that is unique to your organization. When the costume is finished, you will want to own all rights to the design. Ask the designer, or person constructing the costume, to incorporate the colors of your organization in the fabric of the costume. The colors on the costume will be as identifiable as the mascot itself.

Materials you will need, if you are planning to design and construct the costume yourself, are the same as you would use for any sewing project. Other considerations will be to construct the suit large enough for air to pass around the person wearing the suit; polyester fill to make the costume look larger than life; Velcro for ease in getting in and out of the costume; and cardboard or fiberglass for the head.

Most mascot costumes can only be worn for a maximum of 40 minutes at a time. The person inside the suit should be hydrated before putting it on. Mascots should be accompanied with another person as a guide or handler. More than one person may be needed, depending on the size the crowd and the event.

Beginner Tennis Tips and Instructions

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009
by Dan Allanson

Let your opponent blow it before you do. This the best tennis instructions for beginners. See the pros on television slam their way to victory?

And so you go out there and try to hit the ball with as much speed. Next thing you know you have lost a tennis ball over the fence and into someone’s yard.

You see anyone can hit a tennis ball with a tennis racket hard and fast. But it takes years of practice and training to hit a tennis ball hard and fast and over the net and within bounds of the other side of the court. So now that you are starting out you want to work on control not speed and power. That will come later. It is sort of like learning how to drive a car.

Not many boys or girls learn to drive on the freeway going eighty miles per hour. No, you most likely started on a large empty lot and worked your way up to the street and then the freeway. The same holds with tennis. You will not have a catastrophe making a mistake on the court like on the freeway but you should learn to control your shots just the same.

Do you know that even at the professional level that the player who controls his or her shots more often wins the match? Even at that level the player with the fewer mistakes wins. The difference at the pro game is that they can force their opponent to make mistakes. But You do not have to try to do that. All you need to do is hit the ball back over the net and into your opponent’s court. Let him make the mistake.

If you are playing someone at your same level or even someone a little better than you, simply get the ball back over the net and in his or her side of the court over and over and you will eventually win the point because he or she will sooner or later make a mistake.

You will by doing this establish a disciplined mindset. This will serve your game well the more you play. This is the best tennis instructions for beginners and everyone who wants to be a winner at tennis for that matter.

Advice on Buying Used Golf Clubs

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009
by Matt Kasey

What’s the most important possession for a beginning golfer? The answer is a set of golf clubs. Owning clubs rather than borrowing or renting them makes practicing your swing and other aspects of your technique much easier and more convenient. If you’re serious about improving your game, you need this most basic of equipment. Since clubs can be very expensive, though, and many golfers are on a tight budget, shopping around for a good deal on used single clubs or a set of used clubs can be a popular option.

The fact is, technology is always improving and many manufacturers bring out new lines of single golf clubs annually. While the improvement in quality from one set to the next may be miniscule, even a tiny improvement can be enough to encourage golfers to upgrade their stock. Veteran golfers who frequently purchase new clubs no longer need their old equipment. Although it is still of high quality and is perfectly good for novice golfers to use for practicing. In fact, so much quality used equipment is available each year that businesses have sprung up to take advantage of this opportunity, and numerous manufacturers place used clubs up for sale. A quick Internet search will turn up plenty of companies that offer deep discounts on used golf clubs.

The best place to look for affordable and quality golf clubs is on the internet. It is here where you can compare the various prices of “pre-owned” golf clubs and get a feel for how much you may want to pay for your first golf club set. There are hundreds of websites on the internet that will allow you see actual photos of these single golf clubs and make a decision to order them. It is important to surf a few websites and compare the value and prices of several golf club sets. In actuality, Ebay is another good resource you can use to find hundreds of cheap golf clubs and accessories.

The Internet isn’t the only place to look, of course. You might want to do your preliminary research online and then check a local newspaper to see if anyone in your area is selling the clubs you want. Buying locally rather than online has numerous advantages: keeping cash in the local economy, a potentially lower price, no shipping charges, the ability to examine the clubs in person before you commit to a purchase, and the chance to question the previous owner, among other pluses. It is greatly to your benefit to be able to test the clubs before you buy them. An examination might reveal a problem that makes the purchase unwise, or perhaps after you check out the clubs, you’ll realize they don’t actually suit you and you will need to continue your search. Be particularly wary if a price seems too good to be true; chances are, there is a flaw with the clubs and you should turn your attention elsewhere.

A great place to check out is a local sporting goods or golf specialty store. Unlike “big box” stores and national chains, these local stores may have clubs that they’ve accepted as “trade-ins” from customers looking to upgrade their old club sets. As before, someone’s insistence on upgrading can be to your advantage, as you may be able to find quality pre-owned clubs at affordable prices. Some specialty stores may even have an indoor green or driving area, where you can test out the clubs before you purchase them, to make sure they are a good fit for you. Local driving ranges and golf course pro-shops are another place that might be good to look, for the same reasons.

And don’t forget to check with your friends, co-workers and relatives to see if they have any old clubs they’d be willing to part with. You may be able to get a great deal, or even a free club, from a close contact!

How to Buy a Good Tennis Net

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009
by Jonathon Hardcastle

If you are an avid tennis player you may want to have your own backyard tennis court. Even if you do not want to incur the expense of a complete tennis court, it is advisable to have your own tennis net in case the one at your local court is damaged or missing.

You will always have an available net, something that is essential to play if you have your own. You can purchase tennis supplies at your local sporting good store, over the Internet or sometimes even at discount stores. However, the type and quality will vary from place to place.

If you will be playing on a hard surface, a strong, long-lasting, and durable net is advised. These nets are usually made from braided cord that has reinforced coated cables and double mesh material on the top. These high-end nets are best for avid tennis players, if you don’t play or practice as often you can get away with a cheaper net.

However, if you play tennis less often, play on a soft surface, or on an indoor court that is not exposed to the weather, you can cut some corners and opt for a cheaper, lower grade net. In this case, opt for twisted cords instead of braided cords and you can save a lot of money.

Cheap nets usually come with lesser quality materials and this is okay if you intend to upgrade or buy a replacement later on. High grade netting has many benefits, including a longer-lasting net and one that looks like new for longer. When a net is exposed to extreme weather conditions outside, a strong and durable net is a must.

You should also look at the quality of the dowels, grommets and cables that help keep the apparatus taut and attached to the posts. If you have substandard attachments you may find that the housing becomes loose and it starts to sag.

For freedom, a portable net that you can easily put up and take down is ideal. These nets are light and easy to carry, but aren’t advised for extended use. However, they work great if your local tennis court has damaged or missing nets. At home, a portable net can also be used for a backup in the event your permanent net is temporarily rendered useless.

A tennis net is required to play tennis correctly. Without it you can not play properly or distinguish when a ball clears the required height. You can purchase a net at sporting goods stores but ensure you have one that will be durable and last a long time.

by Adriana Noton

Mascots have become a fixture at sporting events around the world. Many of the mascots associated with professional sports teams have even earned their own fan bases. They are as well known for their often outlandish costumes as they are for their antics. In fact the role of the mascot has evolved from a source of good luck to entertainment for sports fans.

It might seem like all fun and games to the onlooker, but it is actually hard word. A mascot spends hours moving around in a heavy costume, often with little ventilation. Naturally, mascots of sports teams have the luxury of costumes made from better quality material, which promotes better mobility. It is easy to forget that there is a person inside that perpetually smiling bear or other character. Their comfort is an important consideration when the mascot costume is being designed.

- Pencils and paper for sketching - Heavy duty scissors - A sewing machine - Industrial strength glue - Foam and poly-fill - Needles and thread - Velcro - Sponge or fleece to use as a liner (often both are used) - A small exhaust fan to keep the costume wearer cool

This list may vary depending on the design and purpose of the mascot. Originally fiberglass was used to make the head of the mascot. No foam is the material of choice because it is cooler and lighter, and therefore makes for a much more comfortable mascot costume.

What Makes An Outdoor Ping Pong Table Special?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009
by Andy Zain

Ping pong tables that are used for playing outside have special characteristics that make them durable when faced with the elements. You will want to ensure that your table has all of the weather proofing components available so that it will last as long as possible for you. Buying a wood table may lead to problems with warping from the sun or water damage. This is why you will want to pick an outdoor ping pong table that is great for outside use.

If you want to use a ping pong table outside, then you want to get an aluminum table. With an aluminum table, you will be able to have your table in a place of high humidity without having any problems from water damage. You can get wood ping pong tables that are suitable for playing outside, but you need to make sure that they have a waterproof coating. This coating will help it stand up to the many elements outside, such as the hot sun or heavy rains. There are also some tables that can have synthetic coating to replace any wood or metal options. The better the materials of the table, the more you will likely have to pay to get one though.

One important aspect to look into when buying a ping pong table is the bounce that you get with the table. Indoor wooden tables often have a different bounce than is found on outdoor metal tables. If you are a serious ping pong player, this may make a big difference in your choice. If you are just looking for a table that will last for many years in the elements of your backyard, then you will want to look into the most durable tables available without worrying too much about the type of bounce that you will get.

For any kind of table that you get, it is always a good idea to get a cover for it. When you put a tarp or a specially designed cover over your table, you keep it safe from the elements and the sun. This is important for any table, because you want to protect the surface from warping from the sun’s heat. A table can also fade over time when exposed to the sun consistently.

If you choose a metal table, then you will have to expect the table to have a slower bounce than a standard indoor table. Also, the spin will generally be less on metal tables.

Another factor that you will want to take into consideration is the weatherproofing of the legs on the table. Some designs come with special weatherproofed exteriors for the legs. This can be great in keeping your ping pong table in great shape for many years to come.

Another great option if you are only planning on using your table outside occasionally, is to buy a ping pong table that is designed for indoor use and then only take it outside when the weather is nice. Then you will have all of the same features that standard indoor tables have, while also keeping your table safe from the weather.
