Tennis Apparel

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

There is a certain picture we tend to associate with a tennis player: white polo shirt with shorts or skirt and matching shoes. They are trendy but elegant, comfortable and classic at the same time. Tennis apparel items could often mean a great deal to someone who is more than just a sports fan. If the person you shop for is a tennis lover, tennis apparel becomes a great gift that could also prove pretty affordable despite the rumors that it costs a fortune.

In case tennis apparel is something unfamiliar to you, google it over the Internet and you will be surprised to see how much information there is available. Very many forums will indirectly inform you about prices and discounts going on at various retail stores and online dealers. They will also provide you with information as to which brands are considered the best, which are considered the least resistant and reliable, which are affordable and which exaggeratedly expensive.

What many tennis clothes users recommend is that you buy the sort of top or shirt that would make you feel very relaxed and that would allow very wide angled movements specific to the practice of this sport. For example, the shorter the sleeves of your tennis apparel, the freer the swing during the game. Some buy tennis apparel also according to the season in which they intend to play. Still others go for the materials that can be worn in both warm and cold seasons.

They strongly believe that the tennis apparel should keep both warm and cool at the same time. As far as the t-shirts for men are concerned, you should know that most players speak of polo shirts in very high terms, as the collar would offer you some back head protection against the sun and would save you the trouble of dealing with sunstroke.

Tips about tennis apparel like the ones above are available on very many web sites. If you are not quite sure what to go for when buying your friend a gift, then you can always challenge him or her to have a discussions about his or her favorite sport. Using a little tact, you will surely be able to direct the conversation to a related topic that interests you, and that is tennis apparel. Making it all look like casual conversation held much prior to his or her birthday, would not make him or her guess what you have in stock for the special birthday.

Tennis Rules

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Tennis is a civilized game that involves neither violence whatsoever nor physical contact. It is widely loved by both men and women to the same extent and therefore widely broadcast especially when tennis opens are unfolding in some part of the world. The game in itself is not very difficult and tennis rules are very easy to understand.

To begin with, tennis rules say that it must be played in a court with two sides and each of the opponents chooses one side. Players also bear different names depending on the action that they take at certain points. The one who serves the ball is called a server while the other is called the receiver. According to tennis rules this game can be played in singles or in doubles. The rules will of course be much easier to understand and follow if the game is not played in pairs. When the server hits the ball he/she has to stand behind the baseline on the deuce court. The deuce court is also needed for even points as this is where they are all played while odd points are played in the advantage court.

After the server hits the ball it is important for the receiver to hit the ball and return it to the server?s half of the court. If the ball first bounces in the service box then the move is correct; but if the receiver hits the ball without letting it bounce first, then he loses points. In the same manner, if the server does not make the ball bounce in the service box of his opponent, then it is considered a fault and the server needs to repeat his serve.

According to tennis rules, one won point is given 15 point equivalents that is why the score may make you thin of a clock. Zero in tennis means love, two points mean 30 and three points mean 45 or the nowadays 40. The game is finished ? either won or lost by one of the players ? when the clock gets to zero again, that is love. In case the score reaches 40 ? 40, a score known in tennis rules as deuce, the winner has to score twice in order to win the game.

Regarding winning, tennis rules state that winners of the set are those who win 6 games by two. In addition, match winners are those who win two sets in a row; if this is not the case, then they have to play six sets that will most likely be decisive. In case the final set score is 6-6, they have to play a tie-breaker in which the score is no longer kept in 15, 30, 40 points but in ones.

All in all, tennis rules are not complicated. However their number is pretty high as it happens with every game. You would say that the more the rules, the more difficult to understand the game. But actually tennis rules are needed simply to avoid confusions and unpredictably unclear situations.

French Open Tennis

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

It is highly unlikely that people will not think of the French Open tennis competition this sport becomes a topic of conversation. In French the name of the competition is Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros or Tournoi de Roland Garros. This tournament lasting for about two weeks is held in Paris at the stadium called Roland Garros where it has actually borrowed its name from. It is one of the most advertised and broadcast sports event throughout the entire world and many VIPs attend it. The audience is always the type that would keep their breath when there is a tight struggle between two players that do their best to win. TV viewers also get a feeling of actually being there on the grounds.

The French Open tennis comes in second on the annual schedule of the Grand Slam tournaments and its history goes back to the year of 1891 when it became a national competition. At that time it was named the International Championship of Tennis from France or Championat de France International de Tennis in French. Initially only players that were registered or licensed in France were allowed to participate in this competition but things took a different turn in 1925 when the French open tennis tournament was finally accessible to international players. Beginning with 1912, the ground the participants were playing on was made from red brick crumbs if we can call it so; actually crushed brick was formed into red clay that covered the ground which until then would only consist of lawn.

The popularity of the French Open tennis tournament held at Roland Garros dates back to one competition between the Philadelphia Four (Rene Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon) who won the Davis Cup in 1927 and triggered the desire in the French to defend their cup in another competition. This new tournament designed to bring back home the cup was held on a stadium named after the World War I pilot Roland Garros and since then the name has become quite resonant.

The word open became used beginning with the year 1968 when the tournament allowed or was open to both amateurs and professionals who wanted to show their skills in tennis. Since then the French Open tennis tournament has also brought some novelties in terms of prizes. Beside the regular ones, they now award Prix Orange for the most correct and press friendly player, Prix Citron for the player with the strongest personality and Prix Burgeon for the one that turns out to be the revelation of the tennis year.

Tennis Equipment

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

To many people, tennis as a sport is the epitome of classic traditions and elegance in a leisure activity. Some still believe that this sport is directed more to the high classes of the society. Still golf would be that sort of game that appeals and is more affordable only to the upper class. And that is because tennis equipment has become more accessible to common people, that is, to the middle class. More and more discounts are made for sports gear that used to be so expensive that no one would actually dare ask about. Usually holidays make a very good reason for retail stores and dealers to offer sales for the large masses of consumers. That is the time when tennis lovers should hunt for tennis equipment and get the long wanted bargains of well known brands.

The tennis equipment that people need to buy in order to practice this sport consists of the tennis racket and the racket bag, tennis balls, and tennis apparel. The attire may comprise a top (a polo or tennis shirt), a pair of pants or a skirt, tennis shoes, hats, visors and bands for the head, the wrists and so on. The tennis equipment does indeed vary in quality and in prices. Some people prefer buying only from leading manufacturers, but these may still be considered too expensive. But in case you can spend pretty much, at least you should engage into an informed spending spree. Tennis instructors and coaches would always offer the best information about the tennis equipment available on the market. And they would most likely advise without having the intention to advertise and gain profits like most dealers would.

Some very popular tennis equipment manufacturers are Dunlop, Fischer, Wilson, Prince Sports, Yonex, Babolat, Nike, Adidas, Lotto, Puma, Reebok and the list continues. It is indeed very difficult to choose from this list and to decide why one manufacturer would be better than the other. But after all, more manufacturers means more competition on the market. Most probably this is the reason why prices have dropped in time and tennis equipment has become more accessible to people. So do not lose your patience, and get a little bit informed about advantages and disadvantages of buying from one manufacturer or other. Or simply go with what you have heard from friends who have already bought from certain brands. Usually, word of mouth based on experience is the best way to gather the real information about products, and the same goes for tennis equipment.

Once Home to Iberian Celts, Montjuic

Friday, February 13th, 2009
by Bob Itungen

Montjuic is a hill on the south side of Barcelona that rises 700 feet or 213 meters into the sky, and slopes sharply into the Mediterranean Sea. The top is basically flat and the eastern side has an amazing view of the city. The site hosted the 1929 International Exposition, which led to the first real construction on the hill.

The hill was settled first by the Iberian Celts thousands of years ago. The hill served as a fantastic vantage point for settlers to the region and as such, in 1640, a military fortress was first built here. In the 18th century the Castell de Montjuic was built in its place, was also a fortress, only much larger.

Today, the Castell de Montjuic has been joined by many tourist attractions making this the most visited area within Barcelona’s city limits. There are opportunities to learn no only about the city’s history, but also the art and cultures of the many settlers to the area. Within the Castell de Montjuic is the Museu Militar, a military museum that is usually reached by a fuicular, or small cable car. You can take this route straight from the Paral-lel Metro Station to the museum.

The Palau Nacional houses the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. The collections displayed here include historic representations from the Roman, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods through the 20th century. The Font Majic, or Magic Fountain is a lighted fountain with a magnificent display, that is highly recommended at night. The water dances to music and decorates the faade of the Palau Nacional.

The Pavello Mies van der Rohe is a museum next to the Magic Fountain, with a collection of art from the very important Spanish architect Mie van der Rohe. The museum was built and then deconstructed for the International Exhibition, and then rebuilt in the 1980s to the exact specifications of the original, representing the architects minimalist construction in steel and glass.

The Poble Espanyol is still standing from the International Exhibition and is a village complete with houses, an open air museum, a children’s village, and arts and crafts are very popular here.

The Olympics were held in Barcelona in 1992, and many buildings and structures were created for the events. The Anella Olimpica, Olympic Ring, is home to many sport facilities including the Olympic Stadium. The building was built to look like the rest of the structures on the hill, but is a completely modern structure.

The Nou Jardi Botanic is a new addition to Montjuic, and these popular botanical gardens have more than 2000 varieties of plants, including the Jardins de Mossen Costa i Llobera, a garden of many types of cacti.

Prince Tennis

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

The word Prince may be resonant for many people around the world, but for sports players, especially for racquet sports lovers, it means high quality equipment such as racquets, balls, apparel, footwear, bags, strings, and many more. These manufacturers cover the areas of tennis, badminton and squash with their more and more developed products for consumers. So, as you may guess, Prince tennis equipment is very much considered good value for money by game lovers.

Prince tennis racquets are famous among players because their manufacturers were the first to release Oversized and Longbody racquets on the market. They also established the record of being the first to show interest in creating tennis shoes that would borrow the shape of the natural foot, and here is where the name Natural Foot Shape tennis shoes comes from. Another breakthrough that they have made was to create the first electric ball machine that would simplify and also increase performance and skill of players especially during training sessions.

The new wave of developments brought by Prince tennis equipment manufacturers belonged to Howard Head who, after having retired, wanted to take up tennis lessons. He did so and had to rely on a Prince tennis ball machine he felt could not do a great job at increasing the rate of skill acquisition because of being too slow. After only a few years of existence, Prince tennis equipment producers were influenced by Head who decided to join the company and give it a new impulse. He was the one who initiated the creation and release of over-sized racquets onto the market for the large masses of consumers.

Prince tennis company also has a remarkable strategy of increasing their popularity and degree of appreciation among customers and players. They have been doing their best to increase consumer exposure and use this as a marketing strategy to create publicity for their products. This consumer exposure has been achieved by sponsoring some very well known and widely loved players like Jimmy Connors, Maria Sharapova, Martina Navratilova and many others.

As a result, more and more players, both professionals and amateurs, have become interested in Prince tennis gear. If the company preserves its acclaim among racquet sports lovers, most likely its team will feel more and more challenged to preserve the good name and high quality products they offer to people. Sponsorships and their understanding for this sport and its lovers will surely bring more innovation on the part of the team that supports Prince tennis manufacturers.

Tennis Shoes

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Tennis shoes are a piece of equipment that many people tend to ignore without realizing that most of the time the shoes are the ones that make quite a big difference both during training and in competitions. The player?s feet run the risk of becoming highly tired and losing responsiveness to the commands of the brain and that can turn out quite bad when as a competitor you need to rely on your resistance to win a game or match. As it may obviously be seen in televised tennis games, tennis players have to run, move a lot sideways and back and forth putting a great amount of pressure on their feet. The pressure placed on the feet can be greatly reduced with the help of a high quality pair of shoes.

Tennis shoes manufacturers are now competing for market ground throughout the entire world trying to come up with breakthrough ideas as to how to improve the shoes recommended for this sport. Every new pair that is ready to hit the markets has already gone through play-tests in which their behavior gets compared to that of their predecessors and to that of other brands currently vying for customers. Adidas, Nike, Lotto, Prince ? these are but a few of the many manufacturers that try to take the lead in terms of tennis shoes and their appeal to buyers.

Generally speaking there are some characteristics that tennis shoes ought to have in order to be considered worth buying. One of them is the comfort that they offer to the sole of your foot. A cushion system can do wonders offering heel strike and helping the player sprint better. Even though they may seem a little stiff when out of the box, it is highly important to analyze their behavior after wearing them for just a little bit of time. The best comfort shoes are those that preserve the effects of the cushion system in time and do not lose this quality after only a couple of wears.

And of course, sole durability and traction should not be left out when considering a pair of tennis shoes. Players train a lot and participate in quite a lot of matches, that is why they need the sole of the shoes to be as resistant to wear as possible. Moreover, their movement on the court is not to be neglected either; slipping would make them lose points. That is why the type of pattern that offers traction is also very important for the choice of a reliable pair.

Tennis Balls

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Who hasn’t seen tennis balls? There’s no way you can miss them in a sports store. They are yellow, pistachio green or orange and their diameter is 6.7 centimeters or 2.7 inches. Like in football, tennis balls are recognized by kids and adults alike and they are often part of children’s games that have nothing to do with tennis as such. The balls and the rackets are the key elements that create the essence or the basis of any tennis game, although other gear items may be necessary too.

Tennis balls have a pretty long history. Back in the old days when tennis came into being, these balls were made of leather and were stuffed with various materials like hair or wool. These old tennis balls were not the kind to bounce and make the game interesting as it is today. The Scots are the ones known to have manufactured these balls initially; they would use animal fur or hair, human hair or wool to stuff the spherical container made of leather they tied or sew with rope made from animal intestines. It sounds pretty repugnant now that we have become accustomed to the present vulcanized rubber balls. The middle stage of development between these two extremes of tennis balls manufacturing (organic material and vulcanized rubber) was the rubber core tennis ball which was introduced once people started playing this sport on lawn towards the end of the 19th century.

Today?s tennis balls are not made simply from rubber anymore. Manufacturers have added more chemicals to the ingredients so that they would receive the appropriate consistency for a good behavior in a match. This mixture of rubber and other chemicals makes about 80 percent of the entire ball. One of its special components is the felt which helps a great deal in rendering tennis balls certain properties like wind and the player?s striking resistance. The felt also has an important role in controlling the tennis balls? bounce and speed properties.

Tennis balls can be either pressurized or pressureless. This aspect also has a great deal to do with how much the ball bounces. The more pressurized the ball, the more bounce it will have. The only thing is that these types of tennis balls lose their bounce in time. As for the pressureless balls, they will gain more bounce in time and are considered more reliable. The more advanced the technology becomes, the better the properties of the balls used in this sport and in many others; and, as a result, the better the sport performance.
