Within this lesson, I wish to discuss the starting position of the server, his job responsibilities and what he needs to be focused on and watching for as the point starts and progresses. The server in doubles should serve from a wider position than in singles. I prefer to see you stand a touch wider than midway between the center mark and the doubles line.

After you serve, your responsibility should be to take care of your portion of the court and by starting here it\’s going to put you in situation to achieve that with minimal recovery movement. Take into account, it will always be safer to hit the ball back to where it originated from than change the direction of the ball. For that reason, the more you serve wide the more you have to consider covering the wide angle return. You must have two things planned prior to a serve; where you are going to aim your serve and where you are intending to go after you hit your serve. When figuring out your serve target, I break up the service square down into three portions; A, B and C. A will represent the section nearest to the Alley, B will stand for the middle section for a serve to the Body, and C will be the part closest to the Center.

When serving on the \”deuce side\” or the right side, your main target ought to be the \”C\” part of the court. You\’ll be serving into your opponents backhand (for the right handed opponent) and lowering the angles of return which will let your partner to move out into the court and take more balls. The second best serve should be to the \”B\” section, looking to jam the returner. Again it minimizes the angles and does not permit the returner to get their arms spread out to produce the shot. The third choice ought to be the \”A\” section. When serving here you are serving right into a right handed players forehand (ordinarily a strength), opening up your partners line for the passing shot and as we spoke of earlier, it can be easier to return the ball back to where it came from consequently it opens up the cross court return too. It\’s critical however to use all of the different serves in order to keep your opponent off balance, but tend toward the higher percentage ones.

Things change a bit for the \”ad\” court or the left side. Your first target ought to be the \”B\” section or the serve to the body. This prevents your opponent from stretching out his/her arms as well as diminishing the return angles. The next ideal target will be the \”C\” section. Even though it is into your right handed opponent\’s forehand, it helps to keep the angles on the returns to a minimum by keeping the ball toward the center of the court and also puts your partner in a better position to poach and take more balls. Again the last choice is usually wide for the \”A\” section which opens up your partner\’s alley plus opens up the angled return cross court.

We\’ll discuss the X Factors during a different lesson that takes into account your opponents weaknesses and strengths when these targets may change. When you are walking in to a match not being aware of your opposition, it is good to start out with percentage tennis as discussed above and adjust your game when you take in further information.

Tennis equipment comes in many different levels and grades. Entry level tennis shoes in particular are something you would never see a professional, or even competitive player wearing.

Tennis demands high intensity lateral movements that act very similar to sprints. This starting and stopping takes its toll on the body, demanding support from the tennis shoes. Good tennis shoes will offer support through both a quality design and plenty of reinforced material.

High ranking players of the ATP tour know all too well how important it is to have a good supportive shoe. Rafael Nadal is one professional that wears only the best tennis shoes available. The Nike Air Court Ballistec is a premier shoe model that will run the average consumer about $120 a pair.

A good pair of tennis shoes might be a large expense initially, but there are certain benefits. Trying to play tennis in a regular pair of shoes can be a painful experience. Professional grade shoes are known for their extra support and levels of durability that aren\’t seen in most shoes.

Tennis shoes used by professionals also often use systems for ventilation. In competitive sports this is very important because excess sweat can build up in the shoe. The Rafael Nadal shoes specifically use a mesh pattern that solves this issue.

If you\’re in the market for a pair of great tennis shoes, look no further than the feet of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Professionals of this caliber know exactly what a tennis shoe needs to have to be successful out on the courts. You won\’t see any ATP player wearing anything but the best to their matches.

you shouldn\’t hesitate to pay the extra money for a very good pair of tennis shoes. The extra money may seem like a lot, but these shoes will last much longer. Not only that, but the extra support may even help prevent an injury.

If you have an interest in starting to play the sport of tennis then don\’t hesitate to get started today. You might need to pick up a few things at the local sports shop, but once you\’ve learned the necessary strokes and found a convenient court location, you\’re good to go.

The benefits of learning how to play tennis are simple. You\’ll spend a few hours developing the coordination to hit a consistent shot, but once you\’ve done it, you have a fun and healthy sport you can enjoy for life.

Tennis is a sport that just about anyone can enjoy. There are leagues and tournament for beginning junior players all the way to experienced senior events. Some players enjoy competitive singles while others prefer the company of others in a doubles match.

Tennis is a sport that really has something for everyone. There are all sorts of available options that involve either competitive or non competitive play. All you really need is to have the desire to play and a good tennis racquet.

One of the most difficult parts of tennis is learning how to play. It can be frustrating at first when you aren\’t able to keep the ball in play. One way to ease the process is to surround yourself with others that are also undergoing the learning process. This can help keep your motivation and interest level up.

Tennis lessons are held in many different formats, but beginners really just need the experience out on court. There isn\’t a substitute for hitting balls. You need time to develop hand eye coordination in order to play a consistent game of tennis. While coaching might help the progress, it is not a substitute for experience.

Once you\’ve added tennis to a weekly schedule you\’ll see the benefits quickly. Tennis can help to provide a great workout that will help to bolster you\’re current fitness routine.

by Jake Granville

Getting access to lit tennis courts can be a real pain. Even when the tennis courts actually have lights, that doesn\’t necessarily mean that they\’ve been implemented according to any standard. This means that the light quality could be very poor.

It\’s true that many companies installing lights for tennis courts simply don\’t understand what is needed to create a high quality system. The standards for playing under tennis court lighting are dictated by the ATP tour. These requirements are quite high, but can adapted to more reasonable levels for recreational play.

The easiest definition of the standard is to remember that professionals should play in a minimum of 70 foot-candles of lighting. The foot-candle is a measure of the intensity of light inside a surface of a 1 foot radius sphere. This means that the illumination of the court should achieve, as closely and as uniformly possibly, at least 70 foot-candles. To measure how well the light is distributed, a series of measurements should be done around the court at different locations.

Measurements taken to check for intensity or light distribution should be made around the area of play. This is about three feet off the court\’s surface. To effectively measure a large area, it is important to take at least 15-20 different measurements. This kind of thorough testing will help to ensure evenly distributed and high quality tennis court lighting.

For the best effect with regards to uniformity and power consumption it is important to put careful thought into the design of the lighting system. A common choice of design will have four poles on each side of the court. The length of these poles may vary anywhere from 20 to 60 feet and will have floodlights mounted at the top.

When hitting a ball it is important that the side of the ball the player sees is fully and consistently lit. The only way to achieve this is to have one of the lighting structures extend behind the player on the court. This can be done by increasing the spacing between the poles, but they must be kept evenly spaced. Increasing the distance between poles will diminish the intensity, but it is a trade-off that will often be worthwhile.

The best designs require lots of planning and thought. You should always have a design like this in mind before you actually start building the system. If you consult the proper professionals and pay careful attention to design specifications, you\’ll be on your way to a high quality tennis court lighting system.

by Owen Jones

It may come as a surprise to those who have not learned the history of cricket, but it is now believed that Cricket really started in Saxon or Norman times as a children?s game played by children living in the area called the Weald of Kent in what is today Kent and Sussex in South East England . It was not taken up as an adult game until the start of the 17th century.

The first documented reference to the game in the history of cricket is to be discovered in the records of a 1598 court case concerning a disagreement over a school\’s ownership of a plot of land. A 59-year old coroner, John Derrick, testified that he and his school friends had played \’creckett\’ on the site fifty years earlier.

The school was the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and Mr Derrick\’s report proves beyond reasonable doubt that the game was being played in Surrey around 1550.

The first mention of it being played as an adult sport was in 1611, when two men in Sussex were prosecuted for playing cricket on Sunday instead of going to church. This was in the same year that a dictionary defined cricket as a boys\’ game and this implies that adult participation was a recent development.

With all the current press coverage of the pressure of gambling upon the result of cricket matches, it is astonishing that historically, gambling played a very large part in the growth of the game in England. Cricket had definitely become a serious gambling sport by the end of the 17th century.

There is a newspaper report of a \”great match\” played in Sussex in 1697 which was 11-a-side and played for the high stakes of 50 guineas a side. 50 guineas would be the equal of GBP5,000 to GBP 6,000 in today?s terms.

The present day system of County teams came around as a result of well-off gamblers forming their own teams in order to fortify their bets and started to employ local experts from village cricket as the first professionals. It is believed that the first ?County? game took place in 1697 between Sussex and another county.

Cricket was introduced to North America via the British colonies in the 17th century, and in the 18th century it spread to other regions of the British dominated world. It was introduced to the West Indies by colonists and to India by the British East India Company in the first half of the century.

The first colonists took it to Australia soon after 1788 followed by New Zealand and South Africa in the first years of the 19th century.

It might come as a surprise to lots of people that the very first International cricket match took place between the United States and Canada in 1844 (Canada won by 23 runs) and the very first overseas tour was by a party of leading English professionals who toured North America in 1857.

The earliest English tour of Australia was in 1862, with the first Australian tour of England being by a team of Australian Aborigine players in 1868.

In 1877, an England touring team in Australia played two games against full Australian XIs that are now thought of as the very first Test matches. The next year, the Australians toured England for the first time and were a spectacular success.

No Tests were played on that tour but more soon followed. At The Oval in 1882, there was played what was to become the most well-known match of all time which gave birth to The Ashes.

Learning how to play tennis is made difficult by the unique hand-eye coordination that it requires. Most beginning players are quickly frustrated by their inability to produce consistent rallies while they develop the necessary skills.

When learning how to play tennis it\’s important to find the right lesson program. Group lessons are a cost effective method for achieving the instruction needed, but note that some programs are much better than others.

Identifying a good beginner tennis lesson from a bad one is something that most prospective students will not be able to do. There are however some things that you can look for even as an inexperienced player to quickly identify the value of a lesson program.

Lessons given to a group are usually much cheaper than private lessons. Prices are divided up among the students which naturally lead to a lower hourly rate. While a lower price is always good, when a group of students becomes too large there may not be enough individual attention.

If a class size is allowed to go anywhere beyond six players to one instructor it is likely to provide insufficient attention to each individual. When you notice that a class has more than six people it is a quick way to determine that the coach providing lessons has poor structuring skills.

Another easily identifiable trait of a good lesson is one that keeps the students actively moving through the whole course of the instruction. If you can observe a lesson in action before signing up, you\’ll be able to see how the students react to the coach. In general, a good lesson is one that keeps everyone actively engaged and having fun.

Tennis is one of the most difficult sports to learn how to play. This means that finding a high quality group lesson program is an important part of becoming a successful player.

A good tennis player needs a good tennis racket. This may seem like a rather blatantly obvious statement, however it is important that a tennis player select the perfect tennis racket for him/herself, or else their game will duly suffer and their skill will not shine through as it otherwise would. At first selecting the best tennis racket may seem like a rather daunting task with all the different brands, sizes etc… Whenever you wish to purchase a tennis racket, it is important that you take into account the following things so that you get the best tennis racketpossible; brands, weight, length, grip size, and of course the head size.

To keep one step ahead of their potential competitors many tennis racket manufacturing companies will make tennis rackets in many different models with varying specifications, this way they hope to accommodate for each and every tennis players’ individual need. With these unique specifications integrated into their tennis rackets, they’re hoping that people will come to know their brand to be the best tennis racket brand for them, and as such word will spread. Whether you are 100% new to tennis or whether you are practically a full-time pro, you can always get advice from your local sports/tennis store where the staff should be more than willing to help you, and give you advice. Whilst the advice I have just given you is most definitely of benefit, there’s nothing better than you trying out different tennis rackets yourself so that you can get a feeling for the tennis racket, whether that be one of the Head tennis rackets or Wilson tennis rackets or another brand, the best way to find out which works best for you is when it is in your hands.

Whilst it is often overlooked, the weight of a tennis racket is very important to consider.A standard tennis racket will weigh between 8.5-12.5 ounces. If you are looking for an easier swing, then generally speaking, you will want a lighter racket. These lighter rackets are particularly suited to children and older people, as these rackets will allow these people faster swings than other rackets, with this they’ll be able to achieve more power behind their swings. Tennis racket weight is a difficult thing to know what to do with, arguably going somewhere in the middle would be the best idea. The heavier a racket the more difficult the swing is, having said this it is more stable and allows for people to impart more of an impact upon the ball as opposed to the lighter racket. If you’re in the middle then theoretically you are not going too far either way, however, it is important that due to the different positives and negatives that are attached to the heavier and the lighter tennis rackets that you select a tennis racket that is going to be comfortable to you. Those on a more professional level tend to go for heavy rackets due to its stability and control.

In general, length of the tennis racket is not as much of a variable as weight is. Recently though many manufacturers have begun to offer lengthier tennis rackets. The rules of professional tennis state that the maximum length a tennis racket can be is 32 inches long. This being said average length tennis rackets are between 27 and 28 inches. You may be questioning what possible benefits could come from having a longer tennis racket, well; with a longer tennis racket you have a greater reach and allow yourself an increase in power.Tennis players who are on the more skilled side of things tend to prefer regular length tennis rackets as this provides them with an easier maneuverability level.

The racket’s grip is the component which links the player and his/her racket, thus it is certainly of great importance. The average tennis racket grip sizes range from 4-4 7/8 inches in terms of circumference. To determine what your perfect grip size is, my tip to you is that you pick up a tennis racket and if you can fit the index finger on your other hand in the gap between your fingers and thumb on your gripping hand then that is the ideal tennis racket grip size for you. This is an important element in deciding the best tennis racket for you, as inappropriate grip size often leads to arm injuries.

When choosing your tennis racket it is also important that you take into account the head size. Head sizes range from about 85 square inches to 135 square inches. Head size affects playability in similar ways to weight. Generally you will have more power when you play if you play with a larger head size; however with a smaller head size you do possess more control. As with the weight issue, it is always important that you opt for what is comfortable to you. The more skilled players tend to prefer medium sized rackets that are neither particularly large nor particularly small.

Now that you have read this article you will be able to proceed to buy tennis rackets with more knowledge, which will make the process a whole lot simpler.

by Jaden Alfred

One of the most frequent questions we get when people are looking to purchase sparring gear is “what does it matter, aren’t they all the same?”

Helping us to better answer this question, we should define what sparring gear is used in each Martial Art as there are many different Martial Arts. For this review we are going to focus on the most popular questions we receive as they relate to the following:

Karate Taekwondo Mixed Martial Arts

1. Taekwondo As many organizations have formed in Taekwondo we will spend our testing on the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) which is the only recognized style of Taekwondo for the Olympics. When you are participating in WTF at competitions, there are rules and officially approved equipment that you must use or you cannot compete. For non Electronic equipment, the only current official sponsor that we are aware of is Adidas.

For WTF Taekwondo, what comprises a full set of sparring gear?

Arm Guards Hand Protectors Foot Pads Chest Protectors Helmets Shin Guards Mouth Guards Groin Protectors

These are the most well known brands: Adidas & Daedo

So far we have seen the best results between the two main manufacturers to be Adidas. Throughout our testing the Adidas seems to hold up better under all conditions. Keep in mind that our testing was not exclusive to Adults, we also tested the sparring gear sets across children and teens alike focusing on protection over price. The reason we focused on protection is that headshots are now worth 4 points in competitions so there is much more focus on keeping your head safe!

2. Mixed Martial Arts You won’t see any sparring gear in any MMA competitions. Due to being a mixed Martial Art, there is the element of hand to hand grappling, chokes and wrestling which sparring gear could be dangerous to the competitors. Sparring gear is used during training sessions with a particular focus on the striking areas (body/limbs) that are the area of strike training during that session.

Groin, hand, chest armor (or chest protection) and groin protectors are worn during training for Mixed Martial Arts.

MMA’s Most Popular Brands: Century, ProForce

From what we see, both Century and ProForce preform very well and are holding up under the daily training that our athletes are undergoing. We will provide a follow up as we are tracking many factors on how each of these gear sets will hold up against each other.

When you want to ensure that you are protecting yourself, you need to ensure that you have purchased the highest quality gear you can. Understanding that your health comes first, it doesn’t make sense to save a little money when you can’t put a price on your good health! Pay more now so that when foot meets your head, you know that you are protected by the best equipment possible.

3. Karate Within the Martial Art of Karate there are various forms that would have their appropriate approved equipment for official tournaments however, in general these are the main pieces of equipment that make up a Karate sparring gear set:

Mouth Piece Head Guard Foot Guard Hand Guards

The most popular brands include: NKF, Century and Macho

A piece of our Century gear seems to have been defective, this happens on occasion so we have decided to extend our testing on this set to ensure that we are comparing apples to apples providing you with the best results we can.

If you are trying to buy on price, think again. Don’t jeopardize all your hard work and dedication just to save some money. Always put your health and safety first, don’t skimp on one of the most important purchasing decisions when selecting sparring gear. Safety first!

Over the coming weeks we will be working towards providing you with the pro’s and con’s of each sparring gear set to better help you in your purchasing decisions. Keep on training!
